What makes the stress management process unique is that we all utilize different strategies to cope with these stressors. Our culture, experiences and perspectives shape these strategies. During this brown bag discussion we will explore and share cultural values and expectations that shape our stress management tools. This discussion will allow us to learn new tools and build a deeper understanding stress management.

Getting Familiar with the American Culture

- Cynthia Tasaki & Kirby Riley-

Want to know more about American culture, American values? Want to fit better in your new environment? Willing to share your own experience? What did surprise you, regarding yourself and your own culture, about America?

Dear fellows,

The NIH Visiting Fellows Committee, a subcommittee of FelCom, is hosting an open discussion seminar on the topic of “American culture” for the fellows, in our upcoming series of Brown Bag informational seminars.

The upcoming seminar’s focus is to provide information on the American culture, etiquettes, holidays, and values. We all know how different it feels when we experience a different culture compared to ours. This is an opportunity to learn and understand the cultural differences, to appreciate everyone in a greater sense. In this seminar, we will also discuss things about the U.S. that were a little different than you originally thought they’d be, e.g. how to figure out when and how much a tip to give in different contexts, what to do and don’t, and so much more.

This seminar will be hosted by experts from the Division of International Services/ORS Cynthia Tasaki & Kirby Riley. We will have an informal presentation from 3 PM to 4 PM and then a Q&A session from 4:00 PM to 4:15 PM.

This workshop is open to all fellows and scientists and will be an excellent opportunity to gather information and ask questions.

Knowing what to do and what not to do makes the difference

Dear fellows,

The Visiting Fellows Committee (VFC), a subcommittee of FelCom, is hosting an open discussion seminar on the very often needed topic “Elevator pitch” for fellows and the upcoming series of Brown Bag informational seminars.

The upcoming seminar’s focus is to provide information on the fundamentals of crafting your elevator speech. We all know how important it is to put our best foot forward by putting a great introduction to your education and research work during a meeting, networking events and job interviews. In this seminar, we will also discuss how to start the conversation to network, what to do and what to avoid in your elevator pitch. This seminar will host the Career counselor Amanda (Dumsch) Langer.

If you would like to speak up and practice your elevator speech during the seminar, send me an email to Ashish Sharma. The first ten respondents will get a chance to speak up. With this, you will have an opportunity to get immediate feedback on your speech.

This workshop is open to all fellows and scientists and will be an excellent opportunity to gather information and ask questions.

If you have any questions regarding this event, contact VFC Brown Bag Seminar Series Chair-- Ashish Sharma. We look forward to seeing you there and to hear from you.
